[*] Brummen 24 January 1920. His religion is Dutch Protestant (Nederlands
Hervormd) so his BS-card reads. He was a bakers help when he moves on 4 September
1937 to Vlissingen, The Netherlands. On 8 September 1937 he is in The Hague
listed as a ordinary seaman with the Royal Dutch Navy (registration # 14883)
for a period of 6 years on the role of H.M. Wachtschip in Vlissingen.
Dirk Jan's medical examination was performed by the health care officer
1st class P.S. Walma van der Molen, who noted as his description: "length
1,735 meter (5'8"), face oval, forhead high, eyes brown, nose thick, mouth
common, chin round, hair blond, eyebrowse dark blond, a large scar of an old
fire burn right of his neck and chest and a small scar on his forehead".
As family relationships he mentioned his father and a D.J. Roethof, living at the Sumatrastreet 61 in Zwolle (who she is is unknown till now, maybe his girlfrind).
On 1 January 1939 he's promoted to Sailor 3rd Class. After a short
stay in Vlissingen she arrived on 28 April 1938 in Java, Indonesia. He continued his journey
to Sumatra where he arrives on 15 June 1938. Effective from 26 July 1938 he served with the submarines, but somewhere else than in Sumatra, because on 28 August 1938 he returned to Java, as his militairy records shows. On 6 January 1939 he arrived on the H.M. Guardship Willemsoord (where it is anckored is unknown). He left on 10 May 1939 to East Indie and on 8 June 1939 he arrived in Baloeran for his tour of 3 years. There he was moved to the Navy Camp Oedjong. On 1 July 1939 he was transferred to the H.M. On 9 March 1942 the Krakatau was sunk by its own crew, probably in the light of the Japanese enemy which was conquering the West-Indies after their attack on Pearl Harbor. How and when the crew became POWs (Prisoner of War) is unknown.
He died as a Japanese POW on 8 September 1943 in Quie (or Kuie) in Siam. He is burried in Kankuri plot 3, row B, #. 74-75.
On his tumbstone 14883 8-9-1943 KM matroos. Dirk Jan saved 1,771.15 Dutch guilders, his relatives also receives an amount of 748,35 guilders as compensation. This money was payed respectivily on 23 January 1947 and on 27 February 1947 to his father. According to the files of the Royal Navy they also paid his father in February 1955 an amount of. DFl. 61,73 as 'compensation Burma-Thailand rail road (click here for map of POW camps at the Birma railroad) . Out of that we can draw the conclusion that Dirk Jan worked as POW at the disreputable Burma rail road. In Fleet order 269 its said the he died on 18 September 1943 but same and other sources also talk of 8 September. We probably never will know what the real date of his death is.

He worked for the N.V. Pletterijen former L.I. Enthoven and Cie. First in The
Hague and later in Delft. F.A.K. was originally hired for a period of 6 month.
He stayed there for 40 years. He was a model maker (in city registration his
occupation as carpenter was mentioned) for the production of tram- \and
rail road points and crossings. He also had an important part in the development and
production of screw gas tanks (holders) in the Netherlands. The Pletterij
also specialized in steel skeleton building, bridges (for the Government),
gas- and oil tanks). The rumor goes that famous painter Vincentvan Gogh had
something to do with this company. At home F.A.K. had a large collection of
self made wrought iron pieces like hanging and standing lamps, baskets, candle
holders, ash trays, reading matter baskets etc. His biggest hobby however was
the opera. He lived in the Stuyvesantstreet 191 in The Hague. He was a typical
real old fashioned Lether. A hard worker, with a particular charm, uncomfortable
to sexuality, pre-posessed and not realy an educator to his children. He didn't
really fit to his wife, one of his children said.
